The Ion Dacian National Theatre of Operetta and Musical will stage seven performances in February dedicated to the music of Johann Strauss the Younger and Emmerich Kálmán, according to the institution’s program for the month.
The schedule includes the operettas Voievodul Țiganilor, Sânge Vienez and Liliacul, featuring music by Johann Strauss the Younger, as well as Prințesa Circului, inspired by the traditional Hungarian rhythms characteristic of Emmerich Kálmán’s compositions.
Last year, the theatre marked the bicentenary of Johann Strauss’s birth with the Re:Strauss festival, which included the premiere of a new production of Sânge Vienez. The staging, created with limited resources and strong directorial concepts, was signed by director Rareș Zaharia.
The continued popularity of Voievodul Țiganilor is attributed to the enduring appeal of Strauss’s music. More than 140 years after its world premiere, the operetta continues to use humor to address social taboos.
Liliacul is presented as a social satire in which situational comedy reduces the dramas of bourgeois life, while the sharp tone of the libretto is supported by what is considered the most refined music composed by Strauss.
The love story at the centre of Prințesa Circului unfolds into a narrative combining stolen identities, contrasting characters and encounters between different worlds, forming what the theatre describes as a musical blend crafted by Emmerich Kálmán.
Performances of Voievodul Țiganilor are scheduled for February 5 and 6 at 7:00 pm, followed by Prințesa Circului on February 12 and 13 at 7:00 pm. Sânge Vienez will be staged on February 15 at 6:00 pm, while Liliacul will be performed on February 19 and 20 at 7:00 pm.
Further information and tickets are available on the theatre’s official website, www.opereta.ro, and through www.ticketstore.ro.
The performances will take place at the Ion Dacian National Theatre of Operetta and Musical, located on Bd. Octavian Goga No. 1 in Bucharest.
