Ron Cohen, Chief Executive Officer of SIG SAUER Inc. — the largest supplier of small arms and advanced defense solutions to the U.S. Military and manufacturer of the M8 rifle selected under the Next Generation Squad Weapon program — conducted a high-level visit to Romania from 14 to 16 April 2026, signaling serious intent to anchor American defense manufacturing expertise in Eastern Europe.
The executive’s itinerary centered on Cugir, Alba County, a historic weapons production hub, and included strategic meetings in Bucharest with industry and institutional stakeholders. The mission carries three concrete objectives: mapping local industrial capabilities compatible with the SIG SAUER portfolio, identifying potential subcontracting and co-manufacturing partners, and assessing conditions for a long-term industrial commitment in Romania.
The timing aligns with Europe’s accelerated push for sovereign defense production capacity. Romania has committed to allocating 2.5 percent of GDP to defense — one of NATO’s highest ratios — as it positions itself as a rising industrial leader in the continental defense base.
Cugir: Two Centuries of Defense Heritage
For Romania’s defense sector, Cugir represents a benchmark of technical competence. With over 200 years of military production history, the Alba County industrial platform has armed dozens of nations and trained generations of specialists in individual weapons manufacturing. Key regional players include Nova Modul SRL, Fabrica de Arme Cugir, and S. Uzina Mecanica Cugir S.A.
This deep industrial tradition — and its modernization potential — directly attracted SIG SAUER’s leadership to the region.
Romania’s Unresolved Rifle Modernization
Equipping the Romanian Army with a modern, NATO-compatible assault rifle remains one of Bucharest’s longest-standing military modernization gaps. Since the partial phase-out of the Cugir-produced AK platform and the incomplete transition to NATO standards, Romania has not finalized a comprehensive program to renew its infantry’s individual weapons. Given Romania’s strategic NATO positioning, this portfolio has regained urgent institutional priority.
SIG SAUER weapons currently serve as standard issue for the U.S. Armed Forces, NATO allies, and partner militaries across more than 90 countries, with full NATO compliance positioning the company to directly address Romania’s requirements.
From Market Presence to Industrial Integration
SIG SAUER has already established Romanian operations through SSI Legion SRL, a newly registered subsidiary based in Cugir that has completed all licensing requirements to operate as a compliant arms manufacturer on Romanian territory.
„Romania has the industrial base, the workforce, and the strategic position to become a genuine contributor to European defense production. We are here to understand how SIG SAUER can build a long-lasting strategic project here, together with its Romanian partners,” said Ron Cohen, CEO, SIG SAUER.
„Romania is not an export market for us. It is an industrial platform. What we are building here — step by step, with real local partners — is a production and technology transfer capability with long-term regional relevance. This visit is part of the foundation we are laying,” added Paul J. Strebel, International Business Executive at SIG SAUER, who accompanied Cohen throughout the visit.
