Bergenbier S.A. has published the fifth consecutive edition of its sustainability report, which tracks the actions and results from 2023.
The company has made progress in reducing its carbon footprint, especially at the Ploiești brewery, through investments in technological processes and resource efficiency in beer production.
“The progress we’ve made in sustainability complements the strong financial performance of 2023, and although it was a turbulent year on a macroeconomic level, we continued to invest in projects that reduce our carbon footprint. Our sustainability strategy focuses on three pillars – people, the environment, and responsible alcohol consumption – areas that align with the global strategy of Molson Coors Beverage Company, the group to which Bergenbier S.A. belongs.
“Throughout the past year, we had CSR and sustainability campaigns that gained public attention and recognition, such as Slomo at the Wheel and Trash into Art, initiatives that raised awareness about zero tolerance for drinking and driving and the importance of recycling. The spirit of sustainability is closely tied to the spirit of friendship, a value we promote within our organization, in our relationships with partners, but also towards the environment and the communities we are part of,” Monica Constantin, Legal & Corporate Affairs Director, mentioned.
The Company Reduced Its Carbon Emissions by 22%
At the Ploiești brewery, the company reduced carbon emissions by 22% compared to the previous year, while electricity consumption decreased by 3.2%, and thermal energy consumption dropped by 6.64%. The brewery also reduced waste by approximately 34%, recycling almost all the waste generated in 2023. Regarding household waste, the producer has been recovering it for energy or recycling purposes for four years now, without sending it to landfills.
“To be sustainable, we must first be efficient, and I can say that 2023 was another year of performance and efficiency for the Ploiești brewery, both in terms of energy and carbon emissions. All these results are the product of a professional team’s work, responsible people who are constantly concerned about what is happening around us. Finally, the implementation of a coherent strategy and the ambitious investment plan targeting both new technologies and enhanced capabilities for people are other elements behind these remarkable results.
“Specifically, last year, almost half of the projects planned for implementation at the Ploiești brewery focused on sustainability, representing one-third of the total allocated capital. Personally, I am proud of everything we have achieved together with the entire brewery team, and I am confident that Bergenbier S.A. is on the right path towards sustainability!” Iulius Chiriac, Supply Chain Director, added.
The company’s sustainability strategy also focuses on recycling, and Bergenbier S.A. has been actively involved from the early stages in the development of the Deposit-Return System, being one of the beer producers that supported the implementation of this project in Romania.
Additionally, in 2023, the company expanded its portfolio of non-alcoholic products with two new assortments for Stella Artois and Staropramen, bringing the total to nine options offered to consumers who do not drink alcohol.
